Carlos Bertão
Profile
.
Carlos Bertao, who is originally from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a bassoonist specialised not only in historical instruments but also in symphonic and opera music, thanks to his stint with the Rio de Janeiro Municipal Theatre Symphony Orchestra. His predilection for trying out new styles brought him to Geneva where he gained more experience with the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and the Fribourg Chamber Orchestra among others.
Given his passion for artistic research, he studied the repertoire for solo bassoon of the Brazilian composer, Francisco Mignone, and made a world premiere recording of his Sonatina for Solo Bassoon. He was awarded the Chamber Music Prize at the 2017 Villa-Lobos Festival with the Rio de Janeiro Reeds Trio. That same year, he shared with Vivian Meira the 2nd prize ex aequo in the Competition of the Brazilian Double Reed Association, no 1st prize having been awarded, in Joao Pessoa.
In recent years, he has specialised in the early music repertoire and created the production “Edipo Re”, based on excerpts of opera seria unearthed in Italian libraries, as part of the Pasticcio alla napolitana research project at the Geneva Haute école de musique. He has played baroque bassoon in concert in Switzerland, France, Germany and Austria. In 2023, he got his degree in historical bassoon under the baton of the brilliant Giulia Genini. He received the Fondation Leenaard Cultural Fellowship in 2023 and is currently doing research using historical sources to shape a better understanding of the role of the bassoon in baroque opera.
Since 2016, he has been working with Jesus Figueiro and Leonardo Uzeda for the Ensemble Gravidades, which specialises in highlighting the XVIIIth century repertory. This ensemble has been working since 2022 to popularise Brazilian music from over the centuries in Switzerland.
